In this groundbreaking book, renowned historian and religious scholar Dr. Mark Edwards meticulously examines the historical and literary evidence surrounding Jesus of Nazareth. Drawing on cutting-edge research and a wide range of sources, Edwards presents a compelling argument that challenges traditional beliefs and offers a fresh perspective on Jesus' existence and teachings.
The Historical Evidence
Despite the extensive literature surrounding Jesus, there is surprisingly little historical evidence to support his existence. The earliest surviving Christian texts, such as the letters of Paul, were written decades after Jesus' alleged crucifixion. These texts provide only fragmentary and often contradictory accounts of his life and ministry.
The Gospels, which are the primary sources of information about Jesus, were written even later, in the late 1st and early 2nd centuries CE. These texts are not objective historical accounts, but rather religious narratives that were written to promote the Christian faith. As a result, they contain numerous embellishments, legends, and miracles that cannot be verified.
Outside of Christian sources, there are only a handful of non-Christian references to Jesus. These references are brief and ambiguous, and they do not provide any independent confirmation of his existence.
The Literary Evidence
In addition to the historical evidence, Edwards also examines the literary evidence surrounding Jesus. He argues that the Gospels are not simply historical accounts, but rather works of fiction that were inspired by a variety of sources, including Jewish scriptures, Greek mythology, and Roman history.
For example, Edwards points to the striking similarities between the story of Jesus and the story of the pagan god Mithras. Both gods were born of a virgin, performed miracles, died, and were resurrected. Edwards argues that these similarities suggest that the story of Jesus may have been borrowed from earlier pagan myths.
Edwards also notes that the Gospels contain numerous anachronisms and other inconsistencies that suggest that they are not based on reliable historical sources. For example, the Gospels claim that Jesus was crucified under the Roman governor Pontius Pilate. However, Pilate was not governor of Judea until 26 CE, which is several years after the alleged crucifixion.
In light of the evidence presented in this book, Edwards concludes that the historical evidence for the existence of Jesus of Nazareth is extremely weak and that the Gospels are not reliable historical accounts. He argues that the story of Jesus is a myth that was created by early Christians to promote their faith.
While Edwards' s may be controversial, they are based on a careful and thorough examination of the evidence. This book is a must-read for anyone who is interested in the historical and literary evidence surrounding Jesus of Nazareth and its implications for the Christian faith.
