I recently had a very close call with a scammer who tried to steal my Ford Edge. I'm sharing my story so that others can be aware of this scam and protect themselves from falling victim to it.
It all started when I received a text message from a number I didn't recognize. The text message said that my Ford Edge had been involved in a hit-and-run accident and that I needed to call a certain number to file a claim.
I was immediately suspicious of the text message because I knew I hadn't been in any accidents. But I decided to call the number anyway, just to be sure.
When I called the number, I was connected to a man who identified himself as a police officer. He told me that my Ford Edge had been involved in a hit-and-run accident and that the other driver had fled the scene.
The man then asked me for my personal information, including my name, address, and phone number. He also asked me for my insurance information.
I was very hesitant to give the man my personal information, but he assured me that it was necessary to file a claim. So I gave him the information he asked for.
After I gave the man my personal information, he told me that I needed to wire him $500 to cover the deductible on my insurance policy.
I was immediately suspicious of this request. I knew that insurance companies don't typically require policyholders to wire money to cover deductibles.
I told the man that I wasn't comfortable wiring him money. He then became very aggressive and started yelling at me.
I hung up the phone and immediately called the police. I reported the scam to the police and they are now investigating.
I'm very grateful that I was able to avoid falling victim to this scam. I'm sharing my story so that others can be aware of this scam and protect themselves from falling victim to it.
Here are some tips to help you protect yourself from this scam:
- Never give your personal information to someone you don't know.
- Never wire money to someone you don't know.
- If you receive a text message or phone call from someone claiming that you've been involved in an accident, be suspicious.
- Contact your insurance company directly to verify any claims.
By following these tips, you can help protect yourself from falling victim to this scam.
